Let’s begin at the beginning… The First Soccer World Cup took place in Uruguay, 80 years ago. This was the only tournament which did not require the qualification of the teams, instead, 13 nations were invited to participate. The winner was Uruguay.


The host country distinguished itself; there were 13 participating countries and 513,000 spectators watching the games. At the last final tournament (in Germany, in 2006), there were 32 teams, 64 games, 3,359,439 spectators and the big winner was Italy.

World Cup 1934 – Italy

The FIFA World Cup of 1934 was hosted by Italy and took place between 27th of May and 10th of  June, 1934 and had 17 games. The host country did not qualify by default but had to fight for it. There were 16 participating teams and the big winner was Italy.

World Cup 1938 – France

The World Cup of 1938 was hosted by France and took place between 4th and 19th of June 1938. There were 18 games, an average of 4.7 goals per game and the big winner was Italy (for the second time). There were 376,177 spectators (an average of 20,898 for each match).

Due to WW II and all difficulties in that period, there were no world cup competitions in 1942 and 1946, respectively.

World Cup 1950 – Brazil

The 1950 World Cup was hosted by Brazil, the big champion being Uruguay. The competition took place between 24th of June-16th of July 1950 and the world vice champion was Brazil. Sweden and Spain finished third and fourth, respectively.

World Cup 1954 – Switzerland

The World Cup of 1954 was hosted by Switzerland, the competition being held between 16th of June-4th of July 1955. There were 16 teams and a total of 26 matches. The winner was Germany FR.

World Cup 1958 – Sweden

The World Cup of 1958 was hosted by Sweden, the final competition being held between 8 June-29 June. There were 35 matches and 16 teams. There were 3.6 goals per game and the big winner was Brazil.

About FIFA World Cup

The FIFA World Cup, also known as the “Football World Cup” or the “Soccer World Cup”, but in usual speaking referred to as the “World Cup”, is an international association football competition with the participation of the men’s national players of the components of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport’s global governing body.

The soccer championship has been held every four years since the first tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946.

Currently, the format of the football competition involves 32 teams competing for the title over a period of about one month, usually in summer time.

A qualification phase is held throughout the three years preceding each tournament, to determine which teams qualify together with the host nation(s).
